Georgian House
This substantial new build was conceived as a replacement for a tired, run-down property on the same site — but the ambition went well beyond a straight swap. The goal was a traditional Georgian house, redrawn with better proportions and a layout genuinely suited to modern family life.
Getting the architectural character right was equally important. I collaborated with specialist suppliers to ensure that the finer details — coving, architrave, skirting and internal doors — were all in keeping with a genuine period property. It's exactly these touches that give a new build the texture and authenticity it needs to feel as though it has always been there.
And with a house of this scale and quality, there was real opportunity to have some fun. I was able to give full expression to my love of colour and pattern — bringing depth, warmth and personality to every room.
The project didn't run without its challenges. When our building contractor went into administration mid-build, we took the decision to step in directly, absorbing the subcontractors and driving the project forward ourselves. It was a significant undertaking, but one we navigated without losing momentum.
With seven bedrooms, six bathrooms and a range of living spaces — including a snug, home office and dormitory room — the level of coordination required was considerable. I produced comprehensive drawings covering electrical layouts, lighting, joinery and bathrooms, working closely with each trade to ensure every detail was properly considered before work began.
“Kate Finch has really helped me with a design for my interlocking dining room and drawing room... I would definitely use her again and would recommend her to others without hesitation.”
